Balinese massage is the island’s signature treatment, and the one you’ll be offered most often. It’s a full-body technique that blends gentle stretching, acupressure, skin rolling and long, flowing strokes with aromatic oil — designed to improve circulation and leave you deeply relaxed rather than worked over.
How it differs from other styles
- Balinese — medium pressure, oil-based, whole-body flow. The all-rounder.
- Deep tissue — targets knots and muscle tension with firmer, slower pressure.
- Aromatherapy — lighter, led by essential-oil blends chosen for mood.
If you’re not sure which to pick, Balinese is the safe default for a first visit.
What to expect
A typical session runs 60–90 minutes. You’ll shower or foot-wash first, choose an oil, and the therapist will check your preferred pressure. Communicate — “lighter,” “firmer,” “skip the face” are all completely normal.
Getting the most from it
Hydrate before and after, avoid a big meal beforehand, and don’t rush off straight afterwards. Our guide to what to do after a massage covers the recovery window.

Frequently asked
Is Balinese massage painful?
It shouldn’t be. It’s medium-pressure by default — firmer than a Swedish massage, gentler than a sports deep-tissue session. Always tell your therapist to go lighter or firmer.
Should I tip?
Tipping isn’t mandatory but is appreciated — 10–15% for a good session, or rounding up, is normal at spas.
What should I wear?
You’ll usually be given disposable underwear and draped with a towel. Wear whatever’s comfortable to arrive in.
